Maintaining traditional plain glass and glazing, published on 1 November 2007 by Historic Scotland, states: ‘…a series of developments took place in the early 20th Century which enabled increased mechanisation of glass production. Various methods were invented which allowed a continuous sheet of glass to be ‘drawn’ out of a furnace of molten glass which was then passed through a series of rollers and cooled. These sheets were then mechanically ground and polished.’
